How would the public react to third parties in government?

Question by Puller58: How would the public react to third parties in government?
While we’ve yet to have any serious number of third party candidates win any seats in government, how do you feel people would react to a serious number of elected third party candidates? Concern? Acceptance? Civil unrest?

Dems and Repubs are basically the same animal now. A few differences but check out a Libertarian or the like. People looking for LESS gov’t instead of more.

Regarding the big three credit reporting agencies – any info re: release your information to third parties?

Question by jjcrap27: Regarding the big three credit reporting agencies – any info re: release your information to third parties?
I’m sure I read this somewhere recently. Experian, Transunion, and/or Equifax have contracts with third parties where they release selected portions of your “profile” to third parties i..e if ABC mortgage company runs your credit Experian may release that info(in a limited manner but definitely contact info) to XYZLoans.net. Who does that and is there currently legislation in the works regarding it?

They routinely do that for credit card and mortgage companies, which is where all those garbage solicitations in your mail come from. However, you can now “opt out” of that by calling 1-888-5OPTOUT.

Well, your basis is wrong. While our system lends itself well to two parties, there have always been third parties.

The Republicans used to be a third party, in fact.

Are ballot laws that prohibit third parties from getting on the ballots discriminatory?

Question by RIP Lux Interior: Are ballot laws that prohibit third parties from getting on the ballots discriminatory?
Are people in third parties and their supporters being discriminated against for not being members of the two parties, which BTW made these laws?
Also, what about third party candidates that are denied their voices from being heard in the debates?

Yes. But “political party” is not a protected class.

I suppose you have the option of changing parties. Like Ron Paul changed from being a Constitutionalist to a Libertarian to a Republican.

As for debates: You have to poll at least x percent popularity in order to take part in the debates, if I’m not mistaken. (although Ross Perot got a significant percent but wasn’t allowed in, strange.) Yes it’s discriminatory cause it doesn’t give them a fair voice.

What could be easier to happen for third parties to do in this election?

Question by derekgorman: What could be easier to happen for third parties to do in this election?
I’m very convinced that the third parties can make a very strong showing this year inspite of all the ballot access problems. Either third parties will get over 5% of the national vote or get a seat in Congress. But you never know.
Instant runoff voting sounds like a very good option because third parties can do much better than now. But we need some type of proportional representation.

I truly wish that were true. I just do not think we have real choices with the 2 party system. We have a democracy but only get 2 choices for President ultimately and by the time those parties give us their nominees , the candidate is already in bed with corporate America…So I guess we have a Corporatocracy..Run by Corporations or seemingly so …

What percentage of the popular vote will go to third parties?

Question by sarumpi: What percentage of the popular vote will go to third parties?
I believe many undecided figures in the polls were really people committed to voting for Barr, Baldwin, or Nader. The media will act surprised when third parties get 8% or more nationally.

i agree. I had one person come to my house and ask who i was going to vote for. I told him bob barr. He responded with, “so, you aren’t going to vote?”

I told him “no, i’m voting for bob barr”

he said, “okay, i’ll put you as undecided then”

I kid you not, that is what he said. When he asked for what the biggest issue was, i told him civil rights. He looked at me blankly, so i said, “find the iraq war”. then he marked something on his paper.

Do you realize the trouble with third parties?

Question by Jared: Do you realize the trouble with third parties?
Many Repubs and Dems have proclaimed they are leaving their party for a new, sucessful third party. However, they don’t realize that it is impossible for a third party to win! Which is why I believe Mark Levin has it right and Sean Hannity has it wrong. Hannity has expressed interest in a third party, while Levin has said it is more worth our time to reform our parties instead of attempting third parties. Who is right: Hannity or Levin, abandon or reform?

Populist issues over the years our country has existed have been co-opted by either or both parties and rendered the third party irrelevant.
