8. The Mixed Regime and the Rule of Law: Aristotle’s Politics, IV

Introduction to Political Philosophy (PLSC 114) The lecture discusses Aristotle’s comparative politics with a special emphasis on the idea of the regime, as expressed in books III through VI in Politics. A regime, in the context of this major work, refers to both the formal enumeration of rights and duties within a community as well as to the distinctive customs, manners, moral dispositions and sentiments of that community. Aristotle asserts that it is precisely the regime that gives a people and a city their identity. 00:00 – Chapter 1. Attack Ads, Circa 1800

Have this year’s negative political ads really “taken dirty to a whole new level, as CNN’s Anderson Cooper frets? Is a “return to civility…a relic of a bygone era,” as President Barack Obama laments? Er, not exactly. If anonymous political speech, the other widely decried villain of this political season, helped found the United States, attack ads are as American as apple pie. If you fancy yourself a patriot or a history buff, you will most certainly approve this message, which is taken from statements made by, for, and against the nation’s founders. Approximately 1.45 minutes. Written and produced by Meredith Bragg. Voiced by Caleb Brown, Michael C. Moynihan, and Austin Bragg. Check out “The Positives of Negative Campaigning,” why “Attack Ads Are Good For You.” and Reason’s 2006 list of the “Top 10 Dirtiest Political Campaigns” in US history. Ron Paul: Why the Government Lies About Social Security

Please like, share, subscribe & comment! www.RonPaul.com Why the Government Lies About Social Security by Ron Paul Perhaps the biggest media story of 2010 was the influence of Tea Party voters on the Congressional landscape. The new Congress comes to Capitol Hill with a mandate to end profligate spending and restore fiscal sanity in Washington, we are told. But when the House and Senate convene in January the newly elected members will face tremendous pressure to maintain spending levels for entitlement programs. Even the most modest proposals to trim Social Security or Medicare spending will be met with howls of indignation and threats of voter revolt. Legislators who propose any kind of means testing or increased retirement ages can expect angry visits from senior citizens and lobbyists ready to fund a candidate back home who supports the status quo. But millions of Americans now realize that the status quo is an illusion that will not last even another 10 or 20 years. The federal government cannot continue to spend a trillion dollars more than it collects in revenue each year because we are running out of creditors. Fiscal reality is setting in and the consequences may be grim, even if Congress finds the courage to take decisive action now. Courage begins with a commitment to see things as they are, rather than how we wish they were. When it comes to Social Security we must understand that the system does not represent an old age pension, an insurance program or even a

Barbados Labour Party’s St Michael East Candidate – “The Streets Are In Darkness, RISE UP!”

default Barbados Labour Partys St Michael East Candidate The Streets Are In Darkness, RISE UP!

In a watershed moment for the Opposition BLP since the replacing of Opposition Leader Mia Mottley QC, with former Prime Minister Owen Arthur on 18 Oct. 2010 – the Party’s two main drawing cards publicly put aside their differences to tackle General Elections constitutionally due by January 2013. Trevor Prescod in his presentation was electrifyingly militant, exhorting the crowd to march against the current declining standards of living in Barbados, he made so far as to make a stark comparison of Bajan living conditions in 1937 which were just before the Riots which eventually led to the creation of the Barbados Labour Party itself. Ms Mottley’s own delivery was as always saucy, powerful and entertaining – she cited how the Water Authority is once again in the midst of a case where misappropriated funds are under investigation and she is building evidence to show where the flaws originate; the St Michael North East MP also explained how the Director of QEH’s Medical Services is a Non-National and again the Freundel Stuart regime is seeking to change the Laws of Barbados to accommodate the hiring of one person instead of doing the right thing and allowing a Bajan with 12 years of Residency and at least 6 years of Consultancy hold the post as per local legislation. Arthur’s speech at times hearkened back to the old days when he tilted against Lloyd Erskine Sandiford in 1994, while using Barack Obama’s metaphors in an extended manner – “Yes We Can, Yes We Will & Yes We SHALL

How can we expect political party agendas to fix our problems?

Question by I am America: How can we expect political party agendas to fix our problems?
It seems like the two parties (Dem and Rep) are equally hypocritical:

Liberals insist on giving to the poor to make things equal, but if that was the case then there would be no rich liberals, as they would simply give until they were middle class. Yeah, Oprah had a big give, but when you look at what she’s worth, it seems small in comparison.

Conservatives can stop snickering: Often I hear conservatives claim it’s no ones business what happens to our money, but guess what, that money doesn’t belong to the conservative christians. Because all that money conservatives have belongs to God. Does this sound familiar…Sell all you have, give to the poor and come follow me; or how about…it’s easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into the kingdom of God; and finally…you cannot serve God and money. So in the end it’s not technially the govt’s reponsibility to take a conservatives money but it’s the conservatives moral responsibility, their soul hanging in the balance.

Noam Chomsky on Mumia Abu-Jamal & George Orwell – The New World Order Part 1 (1998)

November 30, 1998 www.amazon.com Watch the full lecture: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com Mumia Abu-Jamal (born Wesley Cook on April 24, 1954) is an American convicted murderer, sentenced to death for the December 9, 1981 murder of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner. He has been described as “perhaps the best known Death-Row prisoner in the world,” and his sentence is one of the most debated today. Before his arrest he was a member of the Black Panther Party, an activist, part-time cab driver, journalist, radio personality, news commentator and broadcaster. Since his conviction, his case has received international attention and he has become a controversial cultural icon. Supporters and opponents disagree on the appropriateness of the death penalty, whether he is guilty, or whether he received a fair trial. During his imprisonment he has published several books and other commentaries, notably Live from Death Row. Since 1995, Abu-Jamal has been incarcerated at Pennsylvania’s SCI Greene near Waynesburg, where most of the states capital case inmates are held. In 2008, a three-judge panel of the US 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the murder conviction, but ordered a new capital sentencing hearing over concerns that the jury was improperly instructed. Subsequently, the United States Supreme Court allowed his July 1982 conviction to stand, and ordered the appeals court to reconsider its decision to rescind the death sentence. Conservatives Gov’t saying a mistakes on robocalls scandal

default Conservatives Govt saying a mistakes on robocalls scandal

www.peoplestandup.ca OTTAWA — Opposition parties pressed Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government Monday for a public inquiry — perhaps even a royal commission — into the robocalls affair, but their attacks were blunted when the Tories lambasted a Liberal MP who used a form of robocalling in his own riding in last year’s election. The counter-offensive from the government left its political critics declaring that the Tories are making unfair comparisons to avoid scrutiny in the growing controversy over last year’s vote. In one case, the Conservatives are under attack in relation to how fraudulent phone calls claiming to come from Elections Canada were placed in the Guelph, Ont., riding directing voters to the wrong polling stations on election day. By comparison, Liberal MP Frank Valeriote — who won the Guelph riding — was left defending his campaign’s own robocalls. In that case, the Liberal campaign sent out automated calls recorded by a woman who provided a false name. In the call, the young campaign volunteer criticized the Conservative candidate’s “extreme views” on abortion. Valeriote’s said Monday the message was intended to clarify a local newspaper’s story about his own “pro-choice” position on the issue after some had alleged that he was “pro-abortion.” But missing from the robocall message was any mention of Valeriote or the fact that his campaign had sponsored it. The Elections Act requires that campaigns must identify who pays for advertising, although it
