8. The Mixed Regime and the Rule of Law: Aristotle’s Politics, IV

Introduction to Political Philosophy (PLSC 114) The lecture discusses Aristotle’s comparative politics with a special emphasis on the idea of the regime, as expressed in books III through VI in Politics. A regime, in the context of this major work, refers to both the formal enumeration of rights and duties within a community as well as to the distinctive customs, manners, moral dispositions and sentiments of that community. Aristotle asserts that it is precisely the regime that gives a people and a city their identity. 00:00 – Chapter 1. Attack Ads, Circa 1800

Have this year’s negative political ads really “taken dirty to a whole new level, as CNN’s Anderson Cooper frets? Is a “return to civility…a relic of a bygone era,” as President Barack Obama laments? Er, not exactly. If anonymous political speech, the other widely decried villain of this political season, helped found the United States, attack ads are as American as apple pie. If you fancy yourself a patriot or a history buff, you will most certainly approve this message, which is taken from statements made by, for, and against the nation’s founders. Approximately 1.45 minutes. Written and produced by Meredith Bragg. Voiced by Caleb Brown, Michael C. Moynihan, and Austin Bragg. Check out “The Positives of Negative Campaigning,” why “Attack Ads Are Good For You.” and Reason’s 2006 list of the “Top 10 Dirtiest Political Campaigns” in US history. One of the many banners.

The phrase “Take the streets” is a reference on the one hand to political and worker’s protests that had all but disappeared since the 80′s and 90′s as political parties and workers’ unions increasingly became branches of the same self-serving system, and on the other hand to the need to counter the system’s tactic of isolating people from one another and promote an “every man for himself” system of values.

All this started on May 15 when a loosely organized protest (mostly via the Internet) resulted in a surprisingly large turnout, beyond anyone’s wildest expectation. It was a sort of Internet meet real world moment. The protest took place at Madrid’s Puerta del Sol, which is popularly considered the central point of the city, and where all small protests have always been staged. That same day some people decided to set up camp following the example of Tahrir Square in Egypt. A week later, there were municipal and regional elections and the Electoral Board ruled that people could stay until midnight of the day before the elections, but no later. Defying the Electoral Board and the entire corrupt system that all but forgot where it gets its authority from, tens of thousands showed up to greet the new day as the Puerta del Sol’s clock struck midnight and instantly made them all officially “electoral delinquents”. After a minute of silence the main chants were “The People united will never be defeated” and “The voice of the People cannot be illegal”.

The situation is the same worldwide: Politicians are sold out. Media is sold out. A system that believes it can keep the public away from public spaces. That thinks it can grant or deny the right of assembly. Something has gone very wrong, and it is up to us and our neighbors to reclaim our rights and win back the public space that has been taken away.

how do you go about starting a political party?

Question by cliched_sinner: how do you go about starting a political party?
after asking a question on how we can accomplish world peace i decided the best answer was “to get involved in whichever organisation you feel will acomplish it (or politics)” so i thought about it and realistically no political party would ever want world peace because they have to much money and power to gain from war.
the omly way i can see a light at the end of the tunnel is by starting one, a worldwide party dedicated to peace with no predjudice against religion colour or creed,
i once heard a saying, “never doubt that a small group of determined every day people can change the world, indeed it’s the only thing that ever does” and i believe that hits the proverbial nail on the head.
i guess the first step has to be to get a group of likeminded individuals who also want a world without war and corruption so, watch this space

You would have to register with the government and find a place on a ballot, you would also have to have many people backing you up for a party, not to mention a candidate to run for political office.
